Buying Guide – How to Choose the Best 2 Way Satellite Messenger
Selecting the right satellite messenger requires understanding your specific needs and environment. This guide explores the critical factors to consider before making your purchase.
Network Coverage
Global coverage is essential for international travel. Check if the device uses the Iridium network, which offers the most consistent global signal, or other networks like GlobalSTAR that may have gaps.
Prioritize devices with global networks if you plan to travel internationally or to remote regions.
Battery Life
Battery life determines how long you can rely on the device without recharging. Models with tracking modes can last weeks, while messaging modes may drain faster depending on usage frequency.
Choose a device with battery life that matches your longest planned trip duration.
Messaging Features
Some devices support full email and SMS, while others limit you to preset messages. Decide if you need rich text or if short check-ins are sufficient for your safety needs.
Select a model that supports your preferred communication style for maximum efficiency.
SOS Capabilities
Interactive SOS allows two-way communication with emergency responders, whereas basic SOS simply transmits location. Interactive options provide critical updates during a rescue operation.
Ensure your device has interactive SOS for the highest level of emergency support.
Durability Rating
Look for IP ratings for water and dust resistance. A device rated IP67 or higher can withstand rain, splashes, and short submersion, making it reliable in harsh weather.
Choose rugged models to ensure functionality in wet or dusty environments.
Smartphone Integration
Many modern devices rely on smartphone apps for messaging. While this saves cost and size, it requires a compatible phone. Standalone devices offer independence but add bulk.
Decide whether you prefer app control or a dedicated standalone device for your adventures.
Service Plans
All devices require a subscription for satellite access. Plans range from monthly to annual, with options for emergency only or full messaging. Check the cost and flexibility before buying.
Opt for flexible plans if your usage patterns vary seasonally or unexpectedly.
Additional Features
Features like weather forecasts, navigation tools, and group messaging add value. Assess which extras align with your activity level and group dynamics.
Prioritize features that enhance your safety and navigation capabilities significantly.
How to Use and Care for Your 2 Way Satellite Messenger
Start by activating your service plan and pairing the device with your smartphone if required. Ensure the device has a clear view of the sky to acquire satellite signal before sending any messages.
To send messages, open the companion app or device interface, type your content, and hit send. For SOS, press the dedicated button and hold it until the signal is transmitted, then answer any follow-up questions.
Maintain your device by storing it in a dry place when not in use. Keep the screen clean and check for firmware updates regularly to ensure optimal performance and safety features.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a subscription to use a 2 way satellite messenger?
Yes, all 2 way satellite messengers require an active satellite subscription plan to send and receive messages. Without a plan, the device cannot connect to the network to transmit data. Plans vary by provider but are essential for operation.
Can these devices work indoors or in forests?
Satellite signals are best received with a clear view of the sky. Indoor use is often impossible, and dense forests can block signals. For best results, step outside or into open areas before trying to communicate.
What happens if I press the SOS button by mistake?
Most devices have a cancellation window allowing you to stop the alert before it reaches the monitoring center. If it goes through, stay calm and answer the call to explain the mistake. Misuse can lead to unnecessary rescue efforts.
Are satellite messengers waterproof?
Many models feature water-resistant designs with IP ratings like IP67 or IP68. This means they can handle rain and accidental splashes, but they are not always suitable for prolonged underwater use. Check the specific rating for water protection.
How long does the battery last on a single charge?
Battery life varies widely depending on usage. Some devices last up to 28 days in tracking mode, while heavy messaging can drain it in days. Check the manufacturer's specs for specific conditions and modes.
Can I send photos with these devices?
Yes, some advanced models allow photo and voice messaging when paired with a smartphone app. Basic devices usually restrict communication to text and GPS coordinates only to save bandwidth and power.
